Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of the last year of the Civil War and the first two years of Reconstruction along the Gulf Coast, Running the Salt relates the exploits of two teenage boys who leave home to fight in the Battle of Blakeley, the war’s last major battle, located in Alabama along the eastern shore of the Mobile River Delta.

Billy McCool, thirteen, and Seth Rowan, seventeen, are desperate for a chance to jump headfirst into manhood. As Union troops close in on the last Confederate defenders of Mobile, the boys are itching to join the war before it ends.

With a pistol that Billy inherited from his grandfather, and using Seth’s canoe, the boys manage to show up on the battlefield, but are captured and imprisoned on an island in the Mississippi Sound.

Escaping to New Orleans, Seth and Billy befriend a genteel widow who hires them for several dangerous missions, the last of which involves running the Union blockade in and out of the Port of Mobile, Alabama.

About the Author
The late Ted Sierke, a native of the Gulf Coast where his novel is set, attributed his penchant for storytelling to his grandfather, a German immigrant. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in anthropology, the author taught high school and wrote a book titled Lost Villages and Ancient Kingdoms about native cultures inhabiting the Gulf Coast. This book was used as a teaching aid in the Alabama Public High School System.

Running the Salt Final Battle of the Civil War edition by Ted Sierke Literature Fiction eBooks

This book reflects a historical series of events beginning in 1865 with the “Final Battle of the Civil War” at the little town of Blakeley, Alabama. Two young boys, Seth Rowan and Billy McCool are anxious to join with the Confederate Army and show their back woods skills of shooting and fighting for the southern cause.

The author, Ted Seirke, a historian in his real life combines this Confederate defeat and imprisonment into a great beginning paralleling the events of the day with the mythical adventures of these two boys. Historically, the cruel handling of the prisoners, the shortage of fresh food and potable water, the civil problem of a homeless and jobless black population, the replacement of experienced government leaders with Yankee political appointees, contributed to a huge social problem all along the Gulf States.

Some of the historical facts of the day were the battle of Blakeley, the ammunition explosion at Magazine Point in Mobile, the Union courts, the aid stations for only previous slaves, and the Naval blockade encompassing five Gulf states. Seth and Billy react to each of these personal trials with their cunning and innovative ways of survival. Unlike other single feature books where Jane kills Bill and 300 pages later is exonerated on some technicality; this book depicts multiple adventures thus keeping the reader intent on the two boys solution to the next problem encountered.
In my opinion this book is thoroughly entertaining and worthy of a movie in the near future.

Running the Salt Final Battle of the Civil War edition by Ted Sierke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was hard to lay it down as I was anxious to see what was going to happen next. Is is fiction but the locations and places and events of war were real and are historical.
A marvelous read for Civil War buffs and anyone interested in history. I was in a writers group with Ted when he was writing this book. Following along as he crafted beautiful scenes and developed the characters of these two amazing boys was a fun and rewarding experience. I'm so glad it's published!
I just finished reading the book "Running the Salt " by Ted Sierke. It's about two young boys who grow into fine young men while fighting and just surviving the tail end of the Civil War. Their spin on every situation encountered is one that keeps them on their toes, and what they learn aids them on their journey in becoming honorable young men. You just can't help cheering for Seth and Little Billy.

The story by Mr. Sierke is indeed very captivating from beginning to the end...what a wonderful storyteller. "Running the Salt" is a winner!
"Running The Salt" is the gripping story of two boys who became men by throwing themselves into one of the last battles of the Civil War. The highly engaging heroes, Billy and Seth, endure combat, captivity, and life on the streets in post-war New Orleans, where they enter the service of a mysterious madam who ultimately sends them on a wild mission to get back to their home in Mobile. Mr. Sierke displays his affinity for the singular environment of the Gulf South and makes the reader wish for more adventures for Billy and Seth.
I found Ted Sierke's "Running the Salt" to be a most engaging book. As an avid reader of Civil War themed books, this was an enjoyable read of non-fiction. It branches off from traditional novels of the war in that it begins just as the war is ending and adds the hardships the south encountered in the first hard years of reconstruction. The main characters Little Billy McCool and Seth Rowan reminded me so much of Mark Twain's Huck and Jim. Not only would this make a book that Civil War enthusiasts would enjoy; it is a delightful "coming of age" story about two adolescent boys becoming men. The secondary characters are full of life as well and even the locations along the Gulf Coast carry the story along in dramatic ways. You can't put it down until the end to see what happens to Billy and Seth!
I enjoyed reading the book and found the story very interesting. The characters were well developed and the story line fit well.
Like going back in time! I have lived in south Alabama all my life and am familiar with the places written about! Very entertaining read!
